However I also made it so that the numbers float value's change based on what the first moves direction was (to avoid being able to do a move in the opposite order/ with other directions). I set each direction to a float value so that the combination of different moves will result in a different total number therefore a different animation/ outcome. I have a timer that restarts every time the mouse moves a certain threshold away and the animation would fire if the timer runs out (so your second recommendation). You can use regression analysis to smooth out the mouse path to help determine what the movement was supposed to be.
